On Tuesday, July 1, 2024, The Galilee Society, the Shefa-Amr Municipality, and the University of Haifa held a pioneering strategic workshop, marking the first of its kind in the Arab community. The workshop aimed to develop a ten-year strategic plan for Shefa-Amr to prepare for climate change, as part of the “Building Local Capacities for Climate Resilience” project.
The workshop included a presentation of key findings from a climate vulnerability study conducted in Shefa-Amr, in collaboration with the University of Haifa. Participants were divided into three working groups, each focusing on one of the following themes: heat and public spaces, floods, and vulnerable groups such as the elderly, children, and outdoor workers.
In the first part of the workshop, the groups identified activities and measures to adapt to the climate challenges highlighted by the climate vulnerability assessment. In the second part, each group formulated a vision for a climate-resilient Shefa-Amr over the next ten years.
It is worth noting that these groups will develop a detailed plan to achieve this vision. A similar workshop will be held next week with the residents of Shefa-Amr to ensure community involvement. Ultimately, a comprehensive and inclusive plan for climate change adaptation will be created.
This project is funded by the Ministry of Environmental Protection and the European Union.
